![]() The better you pinpoint the needs of people reading your web pages, the better you'll be able to meet their needs. Define the cultural makeup and age group of your intended audience -- determine their skill level with the Internet. Decide on the purpose of your site: informational, promotional, educational? Will you have newsgroups and chat rooms? Will your site simply transmit information or build community? Will it be dynamic or static? The Vanderbilt University homepage (pictured above) has to meet the needs of many different audiences: prospective students, current students, alumni, faculty, staff, community, employees . . . The design challenge with this type of site is how to best present a wide range of information for diverse on-campus and global audiences. Too much sound, animation, fonts, and graphics lead to clutter and confuse your visitors. Successful themes are subtle and consistent. Remember simplicity! The web site for Peachpit Press has a fun, friendly theme. Many of Peachpit's books are on technical subjects; this playful theme takes the fear out of nontechie customers. Note how the designers have kept the homepage very simple. Notice how the type is as playful as the graphics. This is how a well designed site creates an identity. What can you use for themes? Lots of things! Here are some ideas: artistic, futuristic, Art Deco, high-tech, Western, primitive, photographic . . . use your imagination! web development company. Web Site Design
